...A 1 litre ecoboost Mondeo. I'm not sure this would be a very good buy. It's barely faster than my old Panda and a small boosted engine would probably be under a hell of a lot of stress pulling such a large car around.

Well, at least it's interesting, I suppose. It's remarkable that we've gotten to the point where you can shove a 1 litre in the Mondeo and have it actually move.
Anyway, it's a bummer that they supposedly buggered up the handling with the new Mondeo. I've rather liked the look of it ever since they unveiled the concept.

I remember reading a test of the focus with the EB1.0 and it wasn't flattering, I can't even imagine why they would do that. Its going to get terrible mileage because its going to be overworked.

I never heard about the handling being worse, I've always liked Mondeos. It is more interesting than some of it's other engines, I've soured on diesels a little after the whole Panda ordeal and all the reliability issues we've had in the family. A friends' brother just had pretty catastrophic failure of his 1.6 diesel Focus too.

Yeah you'll be at high revs so much that it seems pretty redundant. I've heard a lot of complaints about the ecoboost engines getting awful economy.

Here is the truth with the EcoBoost - ahem...its about da boost. Anytime you are on boost you are using more fuel than you would for a naturally aspirated engine of the same output, and since the EB engines are designed to feel linear and to kill lag, you are almost always on boost. When it comes to powerful motors, they are great, but for ECO...nope.

I haven't read that many reviews of the Mondeo, but the gist I got from them was that Ford 'Americanized' the Mondeo. More comfortable, more disconnected.

That seems more reasonable than the Mondeo. Not quite as large and a lot cheaper.

That's disappointing, the thing I liked about Fords is they always seemed better to drive than the competition.

That's true. When I had my Panda if you cruised at 2000rpm (about 70mph) you could see 70mpg, cruise at 3000rpm (80ish) the economy would be more like 35-40mpg. The difference when you're on boost against off boost is huge. Needless to say my overall economy wasn't very good... Got 50mpg over the time I had it, which for a tiny diesel is pretty poor.

The general consensus amongst all the reviews I've read - AutoExpress, Carbuyer, Autocar and so on - is that they've given up on the traditional Ford 'sense of fun' for the sake of greater refinement. Regrettably, that sense of fun has been the Mondeo's key differentiator from most of its competition for years, and without it, it occupies something of an awkward middle ground. The Passat does a better job of the whole 'refinement' thing, while the Mazda 6 is now substantially better to drive.
I've never been overly keen on diesel, to be honest - I like my power at the top of the rev range, and a ridiculously high redline if possible - but I know a fair few people who swear by them, and - touch wood - they don't seem to have had any turbo trouble. Most of the, 'That isn't a real number, is it?' mileage cars on AutoTrader seem to be diesels, too.

I have to say in that class the Mazda 6 would be my choice by a wide margin.
I like the torque, genuinely miss that now I drive a petrol. The diesel was rubbish around the city though, the petrol is smoother and more economical around town.
As for reliability.. Our Laguna keeps going through EGRs and the turbo oil seal is starting to weep, the Panda had a multitude of issues, the friends Focus had pretty catastrophic turbo failure and probably some underlying engine issues. That Focus has done 140k though. Our Mondeo that we had a few years back blew a turbo too, it was only about 5 years old.

Why oh why can't we have the headlights the Mondeo gets on the Fusion? Those LED strips around the bottom of the lights just finish the front off perfectly .

Probably to save money since the US don't require running lights, whereas they do here.

I'm sure this is why, but damn do they look better than the US units.
Now I'm looking at the Mondeo on Ford UK and am totally jealous. It's a 5-door lift back, has those lights, and has a giant panoramic roof!? Dammit Ford US, get your shit together and bring that stuff here!

Does anybody actually buy this or any other petrol Mondeo unless they live somewhere they have cheap fuel?
On paper these modern petrol turbos sound a great idea, economy not much worse than a diesel but in real life it doesn't work out that way.

I've never seen them, the majority of cars I see are diesels.
I do know someone who bought an ecoboost Focus and they're not a fan, it costs him more in fuel than his old 1997 2 litre Accord.

I imagine the roof is a very costly optional extra. The hatchback is much better though, sedans never made much sense to me.

There are three Mondeos, four door, five door and estate. Roof's extra though. They're usually diesel and manual.
